Democratic primary voters, Asian American and Pacific Islander voters, Howard County voters, and women in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District need to see, read, and see on the go that Clarence Lam is the only real progressive candidate on the ballot in May. 

A State Senator, Public Health doctor, and dad, Clarence has served residents of Howard and Anne Arundel County for the past nine years. In that time, he has championed progressive values, leading on abortion and reproductive care access, healthcare access and affordability, gun control, and the environment. He’ll bring the same values to Congress and work to enact necessary reforms to deal with the country’s most pressing issues. 

• As a doctor, Clarence knows better than anyone the importance of keeping medical decisions between a doctor and patient. Years before Roe v. Wade was struck down, he was working to protect patients in a world where abortion was criminalized. And in the years since he’s continued that work. He’s sponsored legislation to expand healthcare access to pregnant women regardless of immigration status, make it easier for pregnant women to sign up for health insurance on the state exchange, codify abortion rights into Maryland’s Constitution, and prevent patients’ private health records from being shared with anti-abortion extremist states. 
  
  
• In the General Assembly, Clarence has worked to end the epidemic of gun violence, and knows that we can’t address it without bold, multifaceted reforms. He’s never backed down from the gun lobby, sponsoring legislation to ban ghost guns and expand background checks to all firearm sales. And he’s the only candidate to have sponsored legislation to enact red flag laws and strengthen our gun license system and keep guns out of sensitive places like schools, daycare centers, churches, and polling places – voting against every Republican amendment meant to weaken the law. 
  
  
• Clarence is the lone doctor in the State Senate and would be just one of 15 in the House of Representatives. He led the charge to protect Johns Hopkins workers during COVID and recognizes that a healthy Maryland is a strong Maryland and would work to enact Medicare for All to guarantee universal healthcare coverage. In the General Assembly, he’s capped the cost of insulin at a dollar a day, created school-based health centers and hired more community-based health workers, and opened the health insurance exchange to undocumented immigrants. 
  
  
• Clarence has worked to keep Maryland clean for his daughter and future generations – efforts that led to a Green Champion label by the League of Conservation Voters. He has sponsored and supported important environmental laws like the landmark Climate Solutions Now Act to make the state carbon neutral by 2045, and 36 other bills to protect Marylanders from lead and mercury poisoning, guarantee access to clean drinking water, and ban toxic pesticides. 

Clarence is running to be the first Asian American ever elected to Congress from Maryland and the first person from Howard County to be elected in 100 years. His historic candidacy has earned him the support of key groups like the AAPI Victory Fund, AAA Fund, ASPIRE PAC, Columbia Democratic Club, and the Ellicott City & Western Howard Democratic Club.
